Faculty Resources

A guide made specifically for faculty, including library instruction, plagiarism education, and more!

About Library Instruction

What is library instruction?

  • Library instruction encompasses two concepts: bibliographic instruction and information literacy instruction.
  • Bibliographic instruction is skill-based and teaches users how to effectively use library resources and search for information. Information literacy instruction is concept-based and guides students in creative and critical thinking when articulating their information needs.
  • The library uses both types of instruction, often at the same time, to help students succeed in their courses and engage in scholarly activity.

What are the benefits for students?

  • Reduces student anxiety by giving them direct exposure to library resources and the research process.
  • Saves time and increases critical thinking skills when approaching an information need.
  • Improves student papers and research by providing a foundation upon which to build necessary skills.
  • Reduces student's fear of asking for help by connecting them directly with library staff.

What else should faculty know?

  • As the course instructor, you will benefit from library instruction just like your students!
  • The librarian does all the work. You just need to let them know the following:
    • Content/topics
    • Schedule/timing
    • Format (in-person, online, asynchronous, etc.)
    • Relevant assignments that the instruction will impact
